Mission Hospital Receives Outstanding Achievement Award from Commission on Cancer
Hospital’s Cancer Center Honored for Excellence in Quality Cancer Care to Patients
Mission Viejo, CA (Jul 22, 08) - Mission Cancer Center has been awarded the Outstanding Achievement Award by the Commission on Cancer (CoC) which was established by the American College of Surgeons in 1922. The CoC bestows the Outstanding Achievement Award to hospitals that have shown excellence in providing high quality cancer care across 36 standards of a cancer program. Mission Hospital is among only 66 hospitals in the nation or the top 15 percent of hospitals surveyed, to receive this prestigious award this year.
“The care team in our Cancer Center have devoted themselves by providing our patients with the highest quality of care, and this honor from the Commission on Cancer is much deserved,” said Peter F. Bastone, President and Chief Executive Officer with Mission Hospital. “The dedication of the multidisciplinary team caring for our patients and to offer the best available cancer programs is truly impressive, and this award will surely strengthen Mission Hospital’s resolve to continue to provide the most advanced care available.”
Established in 2004, the Outstanding Achievement Award is presented to oncology/cancer programs throughout the nation for their accessibility of cancer care to patients and voluntary commitment to providing the highest level of quality cancer care. Within the 36 standards there are nine potential areas for commendations. To receive the award a program must receive commendations in all nine areas. Approval is given to only 25 percent of cancer programs in all hospitals across the United States, and only 15 percent receive the award.
Mission Hospital received the highest possible approval rating from the CoC to become eligible to receive the Outstanding Achievement Award. Evaluated on such standards as management, research and community outreach, Mission Hospital’s Cancer Center program complied with or excelled in all CoC standards.
As part of its community outreach efforts, the Mission Hospital Cancer Center and its volunteer physicians offer free prostate and skin cancer screenings twice a year and follow-up with potential cancer patients to ensure their appropriate treatment. Cancer education classes inform community members about general cancer information and risk education. Additionally, specialized support groups cater to a wide range of community and patient needs, including yoga sessions for women’s wellness, support groups specifically for Latino women and “Kids Connected” for children whose parents have cancer.
